Legends of Tomorrow – Season 05

FUI Design + VFX Comp

During late-2019 and early-2020 I got the opportunity to work on the popular DC’s Legends of Tomorrow TV series. I was tasked with concepting, designing and animating the “Prognosticator” interactive map that played a role throughout various episodes during the season. The many moving parts of the Prognosticator were made using a combination of Cinema4D and After Effects. Red Giant’s Trapcode Particular and Rowbyte’s Plexus played a role on the AE side of things. A lot of complex rigging and JavaScript expressions kept the different plugins and 3D renders working in unison in After Effects’ 3D space.

In addition to providing some of the 3D elements for the holographic interface, Cinema4D served as a vital bridge between the 3D match-moves (done in 3D Equalizer I believe, and provided as alembic / fbx files) and the 3D space in After Effects due to its fantastic integration with the Adobe software.

I also ended up doing all of the final compositing of the Prognosticator shots myself in Nuke, which I quite enjoyed.

The “Cat-Chat” cellphone interface in the two opening shots were tracked and composited by the very talented senior compositor David Dewaik.
